Tragedy at Liverpool Victory Parade: Car Plows Into Crowd, Injures Nearly 50 Including Children

A day meant for celebration in Liverpool turned tragic on Monday, May 26, 2025, when a vehicle rammed into a crowd of jubilant fans during Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory parade, leaving nearly 50 people injured, including four children.

The horrifying incident occurred just after 6:00 p.m. local time on Water Street, one of the central routes where thousands had gathered to cheer the club’s latest league triumph.

According to Merseyside Police, 27 victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, with at least two people including one child reported to have sustained serious injuries. Authorities have confirmed that a 53-year-old white British male, believed to be the driver, has been arrested. The suspect, a local from the Liverpool area, is currently in custody. Police have ruled out terrorism as a motive at this stage of the investigation.

Eyewitness Accounts of Chaos and Heroism

Describing the scene as "horrendous," several eyewitnesses told of the chaos that unfolded when the car sped through the tightly packed crowd. BBC journalist Matt Cole, who was present, recounted the terrifying moment:

“It just wasn’t stopping. I grabbed my daughter and jumped out of the way. It missed us by inches.”

Another witness, Matthew O’Carroll, 28, described seeing the vehicle speed past a police van, raising alarm even before the crash:

“The back window was already smashed it didn’t look like a random accident. It looked deliberate.”

The incident instantly transformed what had been a festive celebration into a scene of panic and fear, as sirens replaced cheers and medics rushed to assist the wounded.

Officials Call for Calm Amid Investigation

Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram expressed deep sorrow over the event, saying the “euphoria of the day was tragically overshadowed by violence.” He urged residents to remain calm and allow authorities to complete a thorough investigation before drawing conclusions.

Emergency services have praised both bystanders and first responders for their swift and coordinated actions, which helped stabilize many of the injured before ambulances arrived.

Investigation Ongoing

While the motive of the driver remains unclear, police are urging the public to avoid speculation and await verified updates.

The incident has sparked renewed conversations around crowd safety during large public events, with questions emerging about how a vehicle was able to breach such a heavily attended and policed area.

As investigations continue, Merseyside Police have assured the public of a full inquiry and promised to release more details as they become available.
