Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has leveled serious accusations against high-ranking political figures based in Abuja and within the National Assembly, claiming they are actively fueling the violent unrest plaguing the state.
According to the governor, these individuals are not only instigating the crisis but are also allegedly providing support and resources to those carrying out attacks.
Governor Alia made the explosive claims during an appearance on Politics Today, a political affairs program aired on Channels Television on Friday. He described the ongoing violence in Benue as deeply troubling and absolutely intolerable, pointing to political sabotage as a root cause.
“These top politicians some of whom are serving lawmakers and political actors in Abuja are not just complicit, they are the main drivers behind the scenes,” Alia stated. “They are not only encouraging the violence but are reportedly offering refuge to the perpetrators, feeding them in the forests, supplying them with necessities, and arming them with sophisticated tools.”
While he stopped short of naming those involved, Alia revealed that a judicial panel of inquiry had been constituted to investigate the spate of attacks across the state. He confirmed that an interim report had already been submitted and hinted that the final report expected within days contains damning findings implicating several influential individuals.
“We established a judicial panel to unravel the mystery behind these coordinated attacks from both internal and external forces,” he said. “I’ve received the preliminary findings, and by early next week Tuesday or Wednesday I will be receiving the full report. The revelations are shocking, and many prominent names have been mentioned. We are prepared to act decisively once we have the complete picture.”
The governor emphasized that while some politicians appear solely interested in securing their political influence, he remains committed to defending the lives and well-being of ordinary Benue citizens.
“If they are only concerned about protecting their political turf without any regard for human lives, then I have a responsibility to stand for the common people,” he said. “This is my duty, and I intend to see it through.”
The security situation in Benue State has been deteriorating in recent months, with recurring attacks by unidentified armed groups, especially in rural communities. Many of these assaults have resulted in significant casualties and mass displacements. Governor Alia's comments suggest a troubling dimension to the crisis one involving insider betrayal and political complicity.
