In a deeply emotional twist of fate, the wife of one of the 22 victims who perished in the tragic auto crash involving the Kano State contingent to the National Sports Festival has given birth to a baby boy just six days after losing her husband.
The newborn arrived on Friday, coinciding with the celebration of Eid-el-Kabir, bringing a mix of sorrow and joy to a grieving household.
The deceased, Abubakar Isma’il, was a member of the medical team that accompanied the Kano athletes to the National Sports Festival in Ogun State. He died along with 21 others in a devastating crash that shook the nation and left the Kano sports community in mourning.
Speaking through tears, Ummi, the late Abubakar's widow, described the moment she received the heartbreaking news. She said she was in the kitchen preparing a meal when someone broke the news of her husband's tragic death.
According to her, family members rushed to the accident site shortly after hearing the news but were not granted immediate access to the victims' remains. She recounted her anguish at the General Hospital where the bodies were eventually taken, saying she cried uncontrollably before the bodies were released for burial.
Given how close she was to her due date, Ummi was taken to a private hospital by her family for close medical supervision. On Saturday, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
In a symbolic and emotional tribute, the child has been named Abubakar, after his late father a gesture that family members say will help preserve his memory.
The birth of the baby offers a ray of hope amid immense tragedy, reminding many of the resilience of those left behind and the enduring power of life even in the face of loss.
