On Friday, Wasiu Akinwande, a notorious criminal popularly known as Olori Eso, was arrested by the police.
Olori Eso was arrested at his hideout in the Agbado area of Ogun State after previous attempts to bring him to justice had failed.
The 44-year-old suspect terrorised Lagos communities from 2009 to 2024.
On the evening of July 31, Olori Eso and his gang members murdered Bolakale Yusuff, a commercial tricycle driver, in the Mushin area of Lagos.
With Olori Eso in their midst, Yusuff’s killers numbered at least five. In their hands were lethal weapons, some of which were legally permissible to be found with state security personnel.
The late driver’s assailants brandished a loaded rifle and cutlasses, shooting him and also inflicting deep cuts on his entire body.
Yusuff’s killers filmed the murder on their phones and circulated it on social media platforms.
In one of the videos seen online, Yusuff was rolling on the floor while his killers used the cutlasses on his head, back, legs, hands and other parts of his body.
“You won’t dare do that again. Use the machete on him! You can’t escape. I have promised that I would be the one to deal with you. I am filming it,” one of the assailants, believed to be Olori Eso, said in Yoruba as Yusuff was attacked.
The deceased used to be friends with his attackers until he severed ties with them because he had become uncomfortable with their lifestyle.
Olori Eso was subsequently identified as the assailant who shot at Yusuff while he was being attacked. He was also said to be the leader of the group.
In an attempt to arrest Olori Eso for Yusuff’s death, the police later visited his apartment but discovered he had fled.
At the apartment, the police recovered seven rifles, three walkie-talkies, nine Nigerian international passports and two pistols.
Olori Eso became elusive until the authorities got him in June.
