Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the outer city zone of Ibadanland, Oyo State, have issued a strong warning to Governor Seyi Makinde, urging him to refrain from what they described as wasteful spending and poor financial management of state resources.
Their concerns follow a series of controversial state-funded projects, including the proposed ₦63.5 billion renovation of the Agodi Government House and the ₦14.3 billion payment for an Instrument Landing System (ILS) at the Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, which is currently undergoing infrastructural upgrades.
According to the APC leaders, the ILS project had already received a ₦42 billion full payment in a prior phase, with an additional ₦10 billion later disbursed by the state government raising red flags about transparency and budget duplication.
The party’s position was outlined in a communique issued after its quarterly meeting, held Wednesday at the APC Secretariat along New Ife Road in Egbeda Local Government Area.
“Oyo State cannot be classified as financially buoyant, despite Governor Makinde receiving over ₦22 billion monthly from federal allocations and generating nearly ₦10 billion internally,” the communique stated.
“With a public debt nearing ₦500 billion, it is alarming that the state government continues to fund projects that appear misaligned with the principles of fiscal responsibility and sustainability,” the party leaders added.
They emphasized that funds particularly those saved from the removal of fuel subsidy should be channelled into long-term, impactful development initiatives rather than what they described as "lavish" ventures.
The communique was signed by prominent APC leaders including Alhaji Kamorudeen Ajisafe (JP), Rasaki Akilapa, Lekan Adeyemo, Sule Suara, Alhaji Isiaka Alimi, Hon. Kunle Jenrade, Moshood Erubami, Muniru Adebayo, Yinka Folarin, and Bashorun Billy Ogundele.
Also in attendance at the meeting was Senator Yunus Akintunde, who represents Oyo Central Senatorial District. The senator’s presence was described as a demonstration of solidarity with the party’s leadership in the state.
The APC stakeholders concluded their remarks by calling on Governor Makinde to prioritize accountability, ensure efficient allocation of public resources, and focus on development projects that deliver tangible benefits to the people of Oyo State.
