Former Nigerian Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), has expressed sorrow over the recent devastating flood in Mokwa, Niger State, describing the incident as tragic but divinely ordained.
General Babangida made the remarks on Friday when he received a delegation from the Niger State Government at his Hilltop residence in Minna. The delegation, led by Deputy Governor Comrade Yakubu Garba, visited the elder statesman as part of the traditional Eid-El-Kabir homage.
Speaking during the visit, Babangida sympathised with the victims of the flood disaster, which reportedly claimed the lives of about 200 people and left widespread destruction in its wake. The former head of state described the calamity as heartbreaking and called on Nigerians—particularly the people of Niger State—to turn to God in prayer during this solemn season.
“What happened in Mokwa is indeed unfortunate,” Babangida stated. “But it is an occurrence permitted by Allah. It is beyond human control, and that is why we must submit ourselves in prayer for the souls of those lost and for strength for the families they left behind.”
The flood, which ravaged several communities in Mokwa Local Government Area, has been one of the worst natural disasters in the region in recent times, prompting widespread calls for emergency response and long-term mitigation strategies.
In his address, Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba noted that the government under the leadership of Governor Umar Bago is working diligently to bring relief and support to the affected communities. He acknowledged Babangida’s concern over the incident and appealed for his continued prayers and guidance.
“We know the General has been deeply concerned about the flood disaster in Mokwa,” Garba said. “This visit is not just for the Sallah homage, but also to seek your blessings and wise counsel. The government is making efforts to bring hope and assistance to the affected people, but we also count on your fatherly role, especially in difficult times like this.”
Garba also reaffirmed the state’s appreciation for Babangida’s lifelong service to the nation, describing him as a pillar of hope and a revered figure whose legacy continues to inspire.
“The people of Niger State and indeed Nigeria remain grateful for your service. You are a beacon of leadership, and we assure you that this administration will strive to live up to the trust and expectations you and the people have placed in us,” he added.
The Mokwa disaster has sparked nationwide concern, with humanitarian agencies and state officials mobilizing resources to provide shelter, food, and medical support to displaced families. Calls have also intensified for improved environmental planning, flood control infrastructure, and proactive disaster response systems to prevent future tragedies.
