Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring that his decision was motivated by a desire to secure greater benefits and federal alignment for his state.
The governor made the announcement during a grand political reception held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, where he was warmly welcomed into the ruling party. The event was attended by a large crowd of supporters, party stalwarts, and high-ranking government officials.
Speaking after the ceremony, Governor Eno expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who, although represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, commended him as a “rare leader” with “vision and wisdom.” The governor described the recognition as a powerful source of motivation for his continued leadership.
“Yesterday, I was officially received into the All Progressives Congress (APC) by our President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who described me as a rare leader with vision and wisdom words that deeply encourage me to do more for our people,” Eno wrote in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter).
President Tinubu, through the Vice President, also assured Governor Eno that his decision to align Akwa Ibom State with the political leadership at the national level would bring increased development and federal support to the state.
“Mr. President assured me that my decision to align Akwa Ibom with the Centre will bring more dividends of democracy to our dear state,” Eno added.
Governor Eno also took time to acknowledge the support he received during his transition from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. He described the move not merely as a political calculation but as a strategic and courageous step taken in the long-term interest of the people of Akwa Ibom.
“This is not just a political move; it’s a bold, progressive step made in enlightened state interest, and I’m thankful to the thousands of supporters who have stood with me,” he said.
Reaffirming his commitment to governance, Eno pledged to remain focused on the core principles of his Arise Agenda, which he said will continue to serve as the blueprint for development, even under his new political platform.
“Our Arise Agenda remains our guiding light as we walk this new path together,” he concluded.
Governor Eno’s defection marks a significant political shift in Akwa Ibom, a state long considered a PDP stronghold. Political observers say the move could alter the balance of power ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially as the APC seeks to consolidate its influence across the South-South region.
