Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has directed that this year’s Eid-el-Kabir festivities across the state’s Emirates be observed in a subdued and reflective manner, in honour of the victims affected by the recent devastating floods in Mokwa and surrounding areas.
The announcement was made public through a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Usman, who explained that the decision was prompted by the scale of destruction and loss of lives resulting from the unprecedented flood disaster.
As part of the directive, traditional Sallah events such as the Hawan Bariki, Durbar processions, and other celebratory gatherings have been suspended throughout the state.
“This is one of the most severe flooding incidents Niger State has experienced in decades,” the SSG said.
“The extent of human and material loss is deeply troubling, and the governor believes this Sallah should be marked with solemnity, prayers, and compassion for the affected communities.”
Alhaji Usman confirmed that all Emirate Councils and traditional leaders have been formally notified of the governor’s directive and are expected to adhere strictly.
Governor Bago has also expressed heartfelt condolences to families who lost loved ones and property in the disaster. He has mandated state emergency agencies to scale up their relief efforts and ensure that those displaced by the flood receive adequate support, including shelter, food, and medical attention.
The Niger State Government is appealing to all residents to commemorate the Eid peacefully, to avoid large gatherings, and to use the period for personal reflection and prayer, especially for those whose lives have been upended by the tragedy.
“This Sallah, let us stand in solidarity with our fellow citizens in pain. Let our prayers and kindness be the gifts we extend to them,” the statement concluded.
