Professor Jibril Aminu, Distinguished Nigerian Statesman and Scholar, Dies at 85

 

Professor Jibril Aminu, a highly respected Nigerian academic, diplomat, and former public office holder, has died at the age of 85. His death was confirmed on Wednesday by both a family source and Hon. Abdullahi Prambe, the Adamawa State Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development.

Professor Aminu, who marked his 85th birthday on August 25, 2024, was widely recognized as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished and versatile public figures. Born in Song, Adamawa State in 1939, he left an indelible mark across multiple spheres from medicine and education to governance and diplomacy.

Trained as a Consultant Cardiologist, Aminu transitioned into public service where he made impactful contributions in various capacities. He served as Nigeria’s Minister of Education and later as Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, a role in which he oversaw crucial reforms in the energy sector. He also held the position of Nigerian Ambassador to the United States and represented Adamawa Central in the Senate.

Throughout his career, Aminu was known not only for his intellectual depth but also for his dedication to national development and mentoring future leaders.

Reacting to the news, Hon. Prambe expressed deep sadness, describing the late professor as a rare gem and a guiding figure in both Adamawa and Nigeria at large.

“He was a mentor to many of us  a pillar in the areas of education, healthcare, and national policy. His legacy will continue to inspire generations,” Prambe said.

 

According to a family source, funeral prayers for the late professor are scheduled to take place today at the Abuja National Mosque immediately after the Zuhr prayer, in line with Islamic rites. While an official statement on the cause of death and further burial arrangements has not yet been issued, tributes have already begun pouring in from across the nation.

Professor Aminu’s passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s intellectual and political history one defined by integrity, service, and dedication to the nation’s progress.
