Atwo-storey building under construction collapsed on Monday during a concrete decking operation at No. 3 Craig Street, off Apata Road in the Shomolu area of Lagos State.
It was learnt that no casualties were recorded in the incident.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the building caved in at approximately 1pm, while workers were actively involved in the construction process.
Eyewitnesses said construction workers and nearby church worshippers managed to flee the area before the structure gave way, thereby preventing injuries or fatalities.
In a statement, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that the collapse occurred during the decking phase and that emergency personnel from the Agency’s Cobra Response Team were immediately deployed to the scene.
The collapse also impacted a nearby place of worship — Liberty Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG)—as falling concrete pillars struck part of the church building. However, church members reportedly escaped without injuries.
Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu stated that "preliminary investigations conducted revealed that there was no victim trapped under the collapsed building." He added that the entire construction site has been cordoned off as a safety precaution and for further structural assessments.
Early findings indicate that the collapsed structure was one of two buildings being constructed simultaneously on the same site. While the exact cause of the collapse has yet to be determined, authorities say structural and forensic investigations are ongoing.
"The public can be assured that appropriate sanctions will follow if any construction violations are discovered," the LASEMA boss noted.
