Dr. Eweama Named Among 2025 National Diaspora Merit Award Recipients

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has nominated renowned health policy expert and community leader, Dr. Pedus Chidiebere Eweama, for the prestigious National Diaspora Merit Award 2025.

The recognition is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to honor exceptional Nigerians living abroad who have made significant contributions to national development.

In an official letter dated May 22, 2025, with reference number NIDC/CM/001/NDD/25/IV, NiDCOM described Dr. Eweama as a deserving recipient of the award, citing his impactful work in medicine and healthcare, and his role as a model ambassador of Nigerian excellence in the Diaspora.

The Commission stated that the award celebrates individuals who, through their professional and personal achievements, have demonstrated commitment to Nigeria’s progress while also adding value in their host countries.

> “The Commission found you a deserving recipient of the National Diaspora Merit Award 2025 for your significant contributions in medicine/healthcare and as a role model to other Nigerians in the Diaspora to emulate,” the letter read.

Dr. Eweama, based in Western Australia, has spent more than 20 years leading health innovation and reform in public, private, and not-for-profit sectors. He has held influential roles within the West Australian Department of Health and has also been an active community mobilizer, previously serving as chairperson of various Nigerian and African associations in Australia.

As part of the National Diaspora Day 2025 celebrations, Dr. Eweama will join other awardees at a hybrid event scheduled for July 25–26, 2025, at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The National Diaspora Merit Award ceremony will take place at 5:00 PM (WAT) on Saturday, July 26, 2025.

This recognition adds to Dr. Eweama’s growing list of honors, including the 2023 Community Citizen of the Year Award from the City of Swan in Australia—the first African to receive the title.

NiDCOM called on Nigerians to join in celebrating exemplary diaspora figures like Dr. Eweama, whose leadership and service continue to promote a positive image of Nigeria globally.
