The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has raised an alarm over a disturbing trend in Nigeria’s higher education system, revealing that 9,469 illegal admissions were carried out by 20 tertiary institutions during the 2024 academic session.
According to a statement obtained by Naijapunchnews, these admissions were not processed through the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) — the official digital platform introduced by JAMB to regulate admissions into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
CAPS was established to ensure transparency, meritocracy, and accountability in the admission process. It enables candidates to track their admission status and offers institutions a standardized method to select qualified applicants based on established criteria. The platform was also designed to eliminate favoritism, backdoor entries, and other forms of manipulation that have plagued Nigeria’s educational system for years.
However, despite several warnings and sensitization efforts, some institutions have continued to flout the rules by bypassing CAPS admitting students through unauthorized channels.
Top Offending Institutions
The breakdown provided by JAMB shows that the Kano State University of Science and Technology (KUST) topped the list with 2,215 illegal admissions. This was closely followed by:

Consequences of Illegal Admissions
JAMB reiterated that admissions conducted outside of CAPS are null and void, warning that both institutions and affected candidates may face serious consequences.
One of the major penalties includes disqualification from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) a mandatory one-year service program for Nigerian graduates. JAMB stressed that any candidate whose admission is not recognized by CAPS will not be cleared for NYSC mobilization, regardless of whether they completed their academic program.
JAMB’s Position
The board emphasized that it remains committed to sanitizing the admissions process in Nigeria and holding defaulting institutions accountable. It called on students, parents, and school administrators to adhere strictly to CAPS guidelines and avoid engaging in or endorsing illegal admissions.
Efforts are currently underway to investigate the circumstances surrounding the illegal entries, with the possibility of sanctions against the erring institutions.
