Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has called on Nigerian political leaders to shift their focus away from early election scheming and instead dedicate their efforts to governance, human development, and the well-being of ordinary citizens.
Obi made the remarks on Friday while addressing journalists at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport in Calabar, shortly after meeting with students of the Dentistry Department at the University of Calabar.
“We must stop talking about politics all the time and start talking about development,” Obi declared. “Real investment should be directed toward education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation. Nothing changes until we begin to invest meaningfully in our people.”
Criticizes Lavish Spending on Politicians Amidst Widespread Suffering
Obi, who served as Governor of Anambra State, lamented the ongoing culture of excessive government expenditure on political office holders, especially in a country where basic infrastructure in education and healthcare remains severely inadequate.
“It is unacceptable for a country to spend millions purchasing luxury cars for public officials, while students are seated on the floor in classrooms without chairs or equipment,” he said. “We have politicians living like superstars, while the masses endure hunger, poor healthcare, and collapsed schools. This system must be dismantled.”
₦20 Million Donation to University of Calabar’s Dentistry Department
As part of his visit, Obi donated ₦20 million to the University of Calabar’s Faculty of Dentistry for the purchase of five modern dental chairs. He also encouraged other well-meaning Nigerians and alumni to contribute toward the procurement of 10 additional units, noting the importance of equipping young Nigerians with the tools needed to thrive in a competitive world.
“Your education is your greatest asset,” he told the students. “With it, you can stand tall anywhere in the world. Take your studies seriously, because the future belongs to those who are prepared.”
Avoids Political Rhetoric, Reaffirms Commitment to 2027
Though Obi is a key figure in Nigeria’s opposition coalition alongside prominent leaders like Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai he deliberately avoided making political statements during the visit, insisting that the conversation should focus on governance and nation-building.
“I don’t want to talk about politics,” he said. “2027 is not my concern right now. I want to talk about how the average Nigerian can feed himself, how children can go to school, how hospitals can provide proper care, and how our public schools can function effectively. When 2027 comes, we will be there and yes, I will contest.”
Obi’s comments come amid growing speculation about alliances and realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. However, the former governor’s message remained consistent: politics should take a backseat to the urgent needs of the Nigerian people.
