Broadcast journalist and media personality Oseni Rufai has backed Kashim Shettima’s recent criticism of executive overreach, describing the statement as clear and constitutionally accurate.
Posting on his official X account, Rufai wrote, “Shettima didn’t speak in fulfulde or Arabic or Aramaic. He was clear no president has the right to remove/suspend a sitting governor. Even a secondary school student is aware of separation of powers!”
His remarks come in response to Shettima’s comments at a public event in Abuja on Thursday, where the vice president took an indirect swipe at Tinubu’s controversial role in the removal of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara in March 2025.
Speaking at the launch of a book authored by former Attorney-General Mohammed Bello Adoke, Shettima said, “Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was floating the idea of removing this Borno governor (pointing at himself), and Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, had the courage to tell the president, ‘You don’t have the power to remove an elected councillor.’”
Although he did not directly name Tinubu or Fubara, the timing and tone of Shettima’s remarks have triggered strong political interpretations.
Online, Rufai’s comment echoed the growing frustration among Nigerians over what many see as the ruling party’s disregard for the constitution and the separation of powers. Other Nigerians on X also weighed in. @Engr_OV wrote, “The most unfortunate thing about APC and their supporters… is their belief that mere narratives can replace facts and truth.”
@OsiIchena2014 posted, “They are still trying to use propaganda to confuse their followers… those that their brains has been used in exchange for goats brain.” @Nze-Anambra added, “I don’t understand how they are trying to twist what Shettima said. As a two-term former governor and former senator he knows the implications of what he is publicly saying.”
