President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has thrown his weight behind the Super Falcons as they prepare to face hosts Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The 2024 WAFCON final is scheduled to take place at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, at 9 p.m. (Nigerian time) tonight, July 26.
In a statement issued just hours before kick-off, President Tinubu lauded the team’s unbeaten run and praised their passion, resilience, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
“Your performance at this tournament over the past three weeks has been awe-inspiring. You have represented our country with pride, honour, and strength,” Tinubu said.
The President highlighted the team’s unity and their act of compassion towards South Africa’s Gabriela Salgado, who was injured during the semi-final, describing it as “a reflection of our shared humanity, empathy, and sisterly affection.”
With Nigeria eyeing a record-extending 10th WAFCON title, Tinubu declared that “if statistics alone win matches, you are already champions,” pointing to the Falcons’ unbeaten streak, their minimal goals conceded, and their dominant record in previous finals.
As a show of federal support, Tinubu revealed he had dispatched a high-level delegation to Rabat to back the team.
The delegation includes key government officials such as the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite; the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; and the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko.
“I thank the families of the Super Falcons team, coaches, friends, the Nigerian Community in Morocco, the Nigeria Football Supporters Club and the Nigerian Mission in Morocco for their steady support throughout this competition,” the President added.
With the nation’s hopes pinned on the Falcons, Tinubu expressed confidence in their ability to “finish strong by the Grace of God” and bring the trophy home.
“I look forward to receiving the team, the trophy, and the officials in Abuja,” he said.
The Super Falcons, Africa’s most successful women’s national team, will be aiming to secure a historic tenth WAFCON title and reinforce their dominance on the continent.
