Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Daura, Katsina State, for Abuja following the conclusion of the third-day Islamic funeral prayer for the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 14, at the age of 82.
The Vice President, who had been in Daura to pay his respects and lead prayers for the late elder statesman, left the town on Thursday, July 17, to return to the Federal Capital Territory, where he is expected to attend a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting convened in Buhari’s honour.
According to Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications to the Vice President, Shettima joined several high-profile dignitaries at the solemn prayer session, which took place at the late president’s family home in Daura.
“Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Daura, Katsina State, for Abuja following the conclusion of the third-day prayer for the late former President Muhammadu Buhari,” Nkwocha said in a statement released on Thursday.
The gathering in Daura included notable figures such as former Vice President Namadi Sambo, Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, and several ministers and traditional leaders. The third-day prayer is a significant Islamic rite held in honour of the deceased.
President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s former Head of State and two-term civilian president (2015–2023), died at a hospital in London after a brief illness. His body was flown back to Nigeria and laid to rest on Tuesday, July 16, at his private residence in Daura, in accordance with Islamic burial traditions.
The Vice President is expected to join President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and members of the Federal Executive Council later today at a special meeting in Abuja to pay tribute and reflect on Buhari’s legacy as a soldier, former military ruler, and elected president.
