A political commentator, Abdul-Aziz Na’ibi Abubakar, has asserted that Nigerians who voted against former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GEJ) in 2015 for perceived leadership failures have “no logical reason” to support Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections unless motivated by “regional or tribal prejudice.”
The statement, shared on his X handle on Friday, has ignited a firestorm of reactions, with users on X debating Nigeria’s political landscape, tribal affiliations, and leadership accountability.
Abubakar’s post directly challenges the consistency of voters who opposed Jonathan in 2015, suggesting that supporting Tinubu in 2027 would reflect bias rather than principle.
“If you voted against GEJ in 2015 due to his perceived failure in leadership, you have no logical reason to support Bola Tinubu in 2027, unless your decision is driven by regional or tribal prejudice,” he wrote.
The statement has drawn both support and sharp criticism, with some users accusing Abubakar of hypocrisy or pushing a regional agenda, while others echoed his call for non-tribal political decisions.
Some X users pointed to Tinubu’s role in supporting former President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2015 victory, questioning why northern voters, in particular, appear to distance themselves from Tinubu now.
“I am despised why average northerners are not in support of Tinubu, knowing fully well the role he played for Buhari to emerge as president in 2015. He gave his massive support for him,” wrote @onwuanaibe40929, emphasizing the need for national unity over regional divides.
Critics of Abubakar’s post were quick to challenge his stance, particularly those who support other political figures like Atiku Abubakar.
“Lol, Yaro, don’t worry yourself because no sensible Nigerian will vote for Atiku except all of you parasites feeding on him,” commented @OmotundeBabs, dismissing Atiku’s viability while accusing Abubakar of selective criticism.
Similarly, @OduObodumu referenced Atiku’s opposition to Jonathan in 2015, stating, “Incidentally, your Messiah & paymaster is one of them. He worked against GEJ, despite appeals, and did everything to get him out. So no Nigerian should vote for Atiku.”
Others demanded more clarity from Abubakar on alternative candidates.
“If you don’t want PBAT in 2027, it’s your right to, but if you want others to join in your journey, you will need to do more than fGEJ as your only reference point, bro. Who are you bringing, and what will the person do differently, Sir,” wrote @sunolix, urging a broader discussion on policy and leadership.
