The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has spoken out over the tragic death of a 100-level law student, Miss Chioma Ajana, whose untimely passing has thrown the institution into mourning.
Chioma, who had only recently begun her journey in the Faculty of Law, reportedly died on July 9, 2025, after suffering complications linked to diabetes. According to accounts from colleagues and close sources, she was unable to access her insulin medication on time, a situation that allegedly worsened her condition.
In response to the incident, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of UNIZIK, Prof. Arinze Umobi, expressed deep sadness over the loss and announced immediate disciplinary measures against staff members believed to have failed in their duties. In a statement released by the university, Prof. Umobi confirmed that all doctors, nurses, and security personnel on duty at the institution’s medical centre during the period of the incident have been suspended for three months, pending the outcome of a full investigation.
Additionally, the university ordered the dismissal of the hostel supervisor responsible for the spare key to Chioma’s residence, citing negligence in handling emergency access. UNIZIK also revealed plans to review its partnership with ELMADA Hostel, where the late student resided, in order to determine whether lapses in hostel management may have contributed to the tragedy.
Prof. Umobi assured the student community and parents that the institution will not sweep the matter under the carpet, stressing that the welfare and safety of students remain a top priority for his administration. He further noted that a comprehensive review of the university’s medical and hostel management systems will be carried out to prevent a repeat of such a devastating occurrence.
Chioma’s death has sparked widespread grief among her peers, with many students taking to social media to express anger over what they described as negligence and systemic failures. Student groups have also called for urgent reforms in the university’s health and hostel facilities to ensure proper care for undergraduates.
As the investigation continues, the university community and the family of the deceased await clarity and justice in the wake of this painful incident.
