Nigerians have taken to social media to express anger and frustration after a massive convoy, allegedly transporting First Lady Remi Tinubu, brought traffic to a standstill in Lagos State.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, was captured in a viral post by an X (formerly Twitter) user identified as Uncle Emeka, who lamented that commuters were left stranded for nearly half an hour while the convoy passed.
“More than a 100 convoy vehicle for the president’s wife, we are all on standstill for almost 30 minutes,” he wrote.
The sight of over 100 vehicles escorting the First Lady immediately triggered outrage online, with many Nigerians describing it as an unnecessary and wasteful show of power.
Critics argued that the extravagant display was insensitive, especially at a time when President Bola Tinubu is reportedly lobbying international creditors for financial support to stabilize Nigeria’s struggling economy.
One X user, Peace Maker, reacted bitterly, saying:
“100 car for Remi Tinubu… there was a country indeed.”
Another user, B.I.G V.I.C.K, added:
“100 car convoy for the First Lady is insane. Which kain useless country be this mehn.”
The video has since fueled conversations about government excesses and the culture of bloated convoys among Nigerian politicians and their families, even as ordinary citizens grapple with inflation, rising fuel costs, and worsening economic hardship.
As of the time of reporting, the presidency has not issued an official response regarding the viral video.
