Captain of Nigeria’s national women’s football team, the Super Falcons, Rasheedat Ajibade, has disclosed that the federal government under Bola Ahmed Tinubu has yet to deliver on its promised $100,000 reward following the team’s triumph at the most recent Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Ajibade disclosed during an interaction with Chude Jideonwo.
“We haven’t received their money. Hopefully, they will pay,” she said. “All the promises you hear back and forth, we have not received anything. When they pay it, you will see it in the news,” she said.
The $100,000 gift was announced by government officials as a gesture of appreciation for the Super Falcons’ outstanding performance and victory at the continental tournament.
The pledge was widely celebrated at the time, seen as a sign of growing support for women’s sports in Nigeria.
However, months after the announcement, Ajibade’s comments suggest that the team is still waiting for the financial reward to materialize.
Her remarks have sparked renewed conversation about accountability and follow-through on public commitments made to national athletes.
The Super Falcons, one of Africa’s most successful women’s football teams, have long been vocal about the need for better support and recognition.
