2027: Obidients Beg Jonathan To Step Down For Peter Obi

Supporters of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, known as the Obidient Movement, have appealed to former President Goodluck Jonathan to step aside and support Obi in the 2027 general election.

The call followed a closed-door meeting between Obi and Jonathan on Thursday, which Obi later shared on his X handle, describing the ex-president as a very dear elder brother, statesman, and leader.”

He added that their discussions focused on the state of the nation.

Calls for Unity Ahead of 2027

Although Jonathan has not publicly declared his intention to contest, speculations about his possible return in 2027 have stirred widespread debate.

In reaction, the Obidient Movement urged him to throw his weight behind Obi in the interest of fairness and national development.

The group’s National Coordinator, Dr Yunusa Tanko, explained that while both men are respected leaders, Obi remains the choice of millions of Nigerians seeking change.

Jonathan Should Remain a Respected Statesman

Tanko praised Jonathan’s legacy but insisted that this is the moment for him to support Obi.

“They have been friends for a long time. The meeting was for them to fraternise and discuss how to rescue Nigeria. But for us in the Obidient Movement, it would be great if Jonathan remains the respected statesman he is known for. He has done his best as President, he is respected, and this is the time for him to support his brother,” he said.

The Obidient Movement stressed that Nigeria needs a new direction, adding that unity among opposition leaders will be crucial for success in the 2027 general elections.
