The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has officially commissioned the International Helicopter Flying School (IHFS) in Enugu State, a strategic facility designed to train elite helicopter pilots for both military and civilian aviation roles.
The inauguration marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s aviation history, reinforcing the country’s push toward homegrown skill development, defense modernization, and global competitiveness in pilot training.
Raising the Bar in Aviation Training
The IHFS is equipped with cutting-edge simulators, modern aircraft, and advanced training facilities to ensure pilots receive practical, world-class instruction. The curriculum is modeled on international aviation standards, enabling graduates to compete effectively with their counterparts worldwide.
According to NAF, the school will serve dual purposes: strengthening Nigeria’s airpower capacity while also creating new career pathways for young Nigerians in the aviation sector.
Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Bala Abubakar, said the school is a bold statement of NAF’s determination to “train, equip, and empower personnel with the highest level of professionalism.” He added that the school will help bridge the skills gap in Africa’s aviation industry.

The project was developed in partnership with Aeronautical Engineering and Technical Services Limited and Triax Airlines Limited, underscoring a blend of public-private collaboration in advancing Nigeria’s defense and aviation capacity
Officials noted that the IHFS will not only enhance the operational readiness of the military but also serve as a regional hub for helicopter pilot training, potentially attracting trainees from neighboring African countries.
Training World-Class Pilot
The school’s comprehensive program covers flight operations, technical proficiency, and safety management systems. Trainees are expected to graduate with the expertise required to navigate both combat missions and civilian aviation demands.
“This school will set new benchmarks for helicopter aviation training in Nigeria and across Africa,” a senior NAF official said.
