The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has issued a stern warning to Hon. Afam Ogene, the lawmaker representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in Anambra State, threatening him with expulsion and possible legal action over alleged cybercrime and financial misconduct.
In a statement released on Tuesday by Obiora Ifoh, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, the LP accused Ogene of engaging in actions that constitute cyber harassment of federal authorities and misappropriation of funds contributed by Labour Party lawmakers for the benefit of the party.
The party also claimed that it would seek the intervention of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to investigate and possibly arrest Ogene, who currently heads the Labour Party caucus in the House of Representatives. The party alleges that Ogene circulated a forged document purportedly obtained from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) in an attempt to malign the party's leadership.
Forgery Allegations and Demand for Police Investigation
According to the statement, Hon. Ogene is accused of using a fake official document to launch a smear campaign against the Labour Party leadership, the AGF, and the Nigeria Police Force. Ifoh stated that such a classified document, if it were authentic, should not be in the public domain or in Ogene’s possession.
“The so-called document he is parading lacks a Certified True Copy (CTC) and is clearly fabricated. A genuine communication from the AGF or the IGP would not be in the hands of a lawmaker who has no official affiliation with those offices,” Ifoh said.
The party further accused Ogene of cyberbullying and attempting to undermine the credibility of key national institutions.
“Ogene tried to discredit the Attorney General, the police, and the LP leadership, all in a desperate bid to stir confusion and project himself as a victim of internal politics. His conduct is irresponsible and borders on criminality,” the statement added.
Financial Misconduct and Internal Disputes
Beyond the alleged forgery, the LP also accused Ogene of withholding party contributions made by Labour Party lawmakers in the National Assembly. Ifoh stated that despite repeated calls, Ogene has failed to account for the funds entrusted to him by his colleagues for party development.
“He was suspended from the party due to his inability to lead the National Assembly caucus effectively and his questionable handling of party finances. Instead of cooperating with the party, he has now resorted to fabrications and underhanded tactics,” Ifoh noted.
Political Power Struggles and Threat of Expulsion
The LP believes Ogene’s actions are politically motivated and tied to a larger plan to destabilize the party’s leadership under Julius Abure, particularly after the Supreme Court’s ruling that affirmed Abure’s position as National Chairman.
“Since his suspension, Ogene has gone rogue. He and his allies anticipated Abure’s ouster, but after their plan collapsed at the Supreme Court, they have been scrambling for relevance,” Ifoh asserted.
He also pointed to failed legal maneuvers allegedly orchestrated by Ogene’s camp, including a recent attempt to obtain a favorable court order in Zamfara State, which was dismissed.
Labour Party Considers Recall Process
Ifoh warned that if Ogene persists in his “destructive” behavior, the Labour Party would be left with no option but to expel him completely from its ranks and begin the process of recalling him from the House of Representatives.
“If Hon. Ogene continues to undermine the party and embarrass public institutions through falsehoods, he will face not just expulsion but also a recall from his constituency. His actions are a disservice to the people of Ogbaru whom he represents,” the statement concluded.
The party reiterated its commitment to transparency, discipline, and lawful conduct, stressing that internal disputes should not degenerate into personal vendettas or the use of forged materials to manipulate public perception.
