Popular Anambra-Based Priest Slumps, Dies While Playing Tennis Match

 


Rev. Fr. Anthony Udogu, a respected priest of the Catholic Diocese of Awka, Anambra State, has died after collapsing during a routine tennis session. 

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, May 19, 2025, in Awka, the state capital.

 

According to an official statement by the Diocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Charles Ndubisi, the priest was rushed to a nearby hospital immediately after he slumped, but all efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. The Diocese described his death as a great loss to the church community and extended heartfelt condolences to his family, parishioners, and all who knew him.

Fr. Udogu, born on December 24, 1964, was ordained on August 19, 1995, and had served the Church faithfully for nearly three decades. He was widely known for his humility, deep spirituality, and dedication to his pastoral duties. Until his death, he was the Parish Priest of St. Francis Parish, Awka, and the Dean of Awka II Deanery.

 

The Catholic Diocese has called on the faithful to keep Fr. Udogu in their prayers as preparations for his funeral begin.
