The Federal Government has commenced the disbursement of ₦44,000 in arrears to former members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), fulfilling its promise to offset the differential arising from the recent increase in the national minimum wage.
This payment is targeted at ex-corps members who completed their mandatory one-year national service before the new allowance structure officially took effect. The disbursement follows the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, which raised the national minimum wage and consequently increased the monthly allowance of corps members from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000.
Although the revised allowance came into effect in March 2025, questions had lingered over whether those who had concluded their service prior to that date would receive any retroactive payments. The uncertainty led to widespread speculation and concern among former corps members who feared they might be excluded from the updated benefits.
However, the government had previously assured that all eligible individuals—regardless of whether they were still in active service—would be duly compensated for the shortfall. That commitment is now being fulfilled, as thousands of former corps members have begun confirming receipt of the ₦44,000 payment via various social media platforms, expressing relief and appreciation.
The arrears represent the cumulative difference in monthly stipends owed to those who served under the old wage structure before the new rate was implemented. According to officials familiar with the process, the disbursement is being carried out in phases, and efforts are ongoing to ensure that all qualified recipients receive their payments in due course.
The payment is seen as part of broader measures by the Federal Government to align youth welfare policies with the realities of the current economic climate, while also upholding its financial obligations under the revised wage framework.
