When clicked on the website’s address on Sunday, it showed privacy risks. “Your connection is not private,” the webpage read with a red security feature indicating that users could be harmed or exposed to data insecurity by visiting the website.
Typically, any website with an expired secure site lock (SSL) will become inaccessible or show security errors when users attempt to access it.
According to SSL Checker, the police website’s security certificate expired on Thursday.
As a unitary police force, all its state commands and local formations operate within a single structure controlled by the inspector general of police in Abuja.
It appears that this unitary element applies to its website operation too. This is so because the websites operated by all its state commands appeared to be subdomains of the main website and they were also affected by the expired SSL certificate.
Aside from blocking access to information, the website is vulnerable to bad actors, including hackers. Local and international visitors alike could potentially be exposed to data attacks.
For instance, the web addresses of the Lagos and FCT commands were unreachable. “This site can’t be reached” was the message shown on both sites when checked th on Sunday.
