Adebayo Pelumi, the prime suspect in the gruesome murder and dismemberment of Kogi-based photojournalist Aiyepeku Ayo, has reportedly committed suicide inside a hotel room in Lokoja.
Pelumi, an officer with the Nigerian Correctional Service, had been declared wanted after the brutal killing on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at their residence in the Government Reserved Area (GRA) of Lokoja, Kogi State.
Earlier reports by SaharaReporters revealed that the suspect lured Ayo, who worked with Inside Story, out of his office on the pretext of needing help at his poultry farm.
Once outside, Pelumi struck him on the head with an iron rod and dragged him away.
"Adebayo told Ayo that he needed help with something at his poultry farm. This poultry farm was said to have been located within the same compound,” the report said.
“Ayo got up immediately to go and assist Adebayo. Meanwhile, Adebayo had no idea that Ayo was not alone in the office that evening.”
“So, as soon as Ayo stepped outside the office to follow him to the poultry farm, Adebayo struck without any warning. He had come prepared with an iron rod, and he was shot in the head.
“The attack was swift and merciless, leaving Ayo no chance to defend himself or even understand what was happening to him.”
According to eyewitness accounts, Pelumi dismembered the victim’s body, locked a witness upstairs, loaded the remains into a freezer, and fled in a Hilux van.
When he returned later, security operatives had arrived and attempted to apprehend him. Though they shot his tyres, he escaped into the bush.
On Thursday around 1pm, police acting on intelligence located his lifeless body inside a hotel room, with a bottle of Coca-Cola and a container of Sniper insecticide beside him.
The hotel management alerted the police, who confirmed his identity and deposited his corpse at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja.
The police said investigations into the case are ongoing.
