The Obafemi Awolowo University, in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has issued a new dress code directive warning that students who violate the approved rules risk rustication for one or two semesters, depending on the offence.
The decision was conveyed in an internal memo dated 13 June 2025, with reference number R/DCA/C/IB/XVI/12/266.
The university stated that the sanctions were introduced “in view of the contemporary trend of events in the university.”
According to the statemet, the offences that attract rustication for one semester include: “Sexually Provocative Dresses, Backless Clothes, Transparent Wears, Off-shoulder Clothes, Bomb Shorts.
Tattered Jeans, Dread Locks, Faring for Male/Cowries for Female, Micro/Mini/Skimpy Dress, and Sagging for Male/Female, Hair Braiding for Male, Nose, Mouth, Eye, Extra Rings, Unconventional wearing of face cap, Tattoo/Indelible markings for male, Crop/Jump Tops, Multi-coloured braid for Female, Haircuts with inscriptions, T-shirts with obscene inscriptions depicting immorality, and hooliganism, etc.
Other include; Heavy Make-ups, Rumpled and dirty clothes, and Hair plaiting or weaving by male students.
The memo further outlined offences that would attract a stiffer penalty of rustication for two semesters such as; Coloured Hair Styles, Hair Braiding for Male, Spangled Hair Style for Male, Unwelcome touching, kissing and hugging of opposite sex.
Since the release of the policy, the university has been receiving backlash from the public who viewed the policy as violation of students' human rights and distractions from the academic strides which a tertiary institution should be concerned with.
