A student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has tragically passed away after collapsing while playing football on campus.
The deceased has been identified as Tochi Martins Attah, popularly known among friends as “T-funds.” The incident reportedly occurred on the morning of Monday, July 7, 2025, at the Elmada Hostel football field within the university environment.
Sources indicate that Tochi was initially a 300-level student of the Department of Microbiology before recently switching to a medical course at the university.
His sudden collapse and death during the game sent shockwaves through the UNIZIK community, with fellow students and staff expressing deep sorrow and disbelief at the loss of such a young life.
Engr. Sabastine Aku, President of Useh Youths, confirmed the sad news in an official statement, extending condolences to the bereaved family and the entire university community.
Tochi was also known as the younger brother of Dr. Simon Attah, who serves as the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State.
His passing has plunged his hometown of Useh Village in Enugu State into mourning, with community members describing him as a bright and promising young man whose potential was cut short far too soon.
Friends and family have continued to pay tribute on social media and in person, remembering him for his friendly nature, academic ambition, and love of sports.
University authorities have not released an official statement about the cause of death or whether any medical intervention was attempted at the scene, but the incident has renewed calls for improved first-aid preparedness and medical response on Nigerian university campuses.
